Rumors

I know this is an age old topic of don't start rumors, and they always end in bad things. What I want to get at is where in truth a rumor comes from. Or if someone created a good rumor and tried to spread it about someone would it be viral in the same sense as a bad rumor is spread. I just would kind of like to try and do something with the diploma candidates to see if we can do this social experiment, just for a fun project.
So the question of today is, How is the best way to spread a rumor?

  1. Rumors of course have to be "juicy", or containing information that is mostly secret but could potentially embarrass somebody or otherwise upset the system. The best way to spread a rumor is either word-of-mouth or via the Internet, depending on how far you want this to go. However, chances are that something will indeed go wrong and you will eventually end up with the subject of the rumor catching on to the rumor and becoming hurt.
If you want to do an experiment, you could start a rumor about yourself or (with permission) a friend, and spread it around to those most willing to share, seeing how long it takes to spread the word. Or, you could do a type of rumor not directed at any one person, but rather an organization that would not be offended. Just throwing out suggestions.

  2. As it is said in restaurants, bad news travels 5x as fast as good news, so it's harder to get a good rep for your restaurant than a bad rep. It takes years to build up a good rep, but one day to knock it all down.

  3. I think that the best way to spread positive rumors is to have the person involved be there when you tell the story to a group of people so they can ask questions and get as much of the story right as possible and then move on to the next group of people.
